The cases typically begin when mail and other personal items are stolen from mailboxes, Mendham Township Police said Tuesday.

“We are investigating these cases along communicating with the US Postal Inspectors office,” police said.

Meanwhile, residents of Mendham Township and surrounding areas are urged to keep the following tips in mind to help prevent mail theft:

  • Get the mail everyday, as soon as possible
  • Switch to paperless billing when possible
  • Put a hold on your mail when leaving town
  • Bring outgoing mail to a local post office instead of putting it in your home mailbox

Mail thefts can be reported by calling local police as well as postal inspectors at (877) 876-2455.
